Alexander McQueen; Legacy and Succession

Alexander McQueen's suicide in February of 2010, shook the fashion world, violently. The designer, who struggled with his mother's death, projected his sentiments through the clothes he created, his last line being unusually dark and ominous. He not only inspired two decades of fashion, and pop culture (such as artists like Lady Gaga) but his runway shows themselves, while sometimes garish, brought a whole new meaning to runway itself. He will forever be remembered. RIP Alexander McQueen.

Here's a tribute video of his grand legacy:

PURE GENIUS

And while McQueen himself isn't alive, he lives vicariously through the clothes he created and the legacy he's left. Alexander McQueen, the luxury fashion brand, is now run under creative director Sarah Burton. Their new Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter 2011 Collection emulate some of last years runway, while also taking influences from eastern culture, nature and sci-fi. Here are some of the looks:

"Clothes and jewellery should be startling, individual. When you see a woman in my clothes, you want to know more about them. To me, that is what distinguishes good designers from bad designers."

-Alexander McQueen

“Alexander McQueen challenged and expanded our understanding of fashion beyond utility to a conceptual expression of culture, politics, and identity. He was a provocateur and a raconteur who told stories through his clothes – stories that might draw from the past or other cultures, but were relevant to the here and now. He had the mind of a poet and the heart of an artist. He was a true romantic, in the Byronic sense of the word, who channeled the sublime.”

–Andrew Bolton, curator, The Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art
